Why I Program High Volume and Long Duration Work
Share
Not gonna lie i was pretty happy to get the 285 to go overhead

When the volume, specifically the high volume of one or two isolated things, is continually taken out over long periods of time, the “top end” of the potential for the training seems to lower
What i mean is
Today i did 10x30 sec on the heavy OH BB holds (not all of them with 285, most in the 225-275 range)
Plus 10x50 reps for the hinged delt impulses superset with that
And to be quite frank
The reason i did that is cause going into the session, when i was writing it up, i was genuinely not feeling like doing something with high volume. Didn’t want the boring and the monotonous, wanted to be able to stick to high outputs where i just didn’t have to think as hard
But made me think about a couple months ago where i was doing that
Nothing that really kinda took me and just sat me down in a position where i just couldn’t move and had to finish
Seems like that type of work, which usually tends to be the higher volume - whether a slow lower, iso, joint move, impulse, etc - is what actually keeps the individual fresh
As weird as that sounds
Cause if everything i do in my training is something like a heavy BB lift, for 1 or 2 sets
Then i don’t really need to get that deep with it. Cause at some point the weight is just too heavy. And no matter how deep you get with it you just can’t lift it
But that’s not true with the simple, higher volume work
Cause with that, there is ALWAYS that aspect of i could probably do a little more or go a little further or probably could have pushed just a tad bit longer or harder
It very very rarely gets to the point of the weight was just too much or i actually physically couldn’t do it anymore
So it’s like getting to that point helps us sharpen the cleanliness of pursuit we have
For lack of a better way of saying it
Like it just very simply sits you down and asks what you want to do
And that seems to be very beneficial for the training process as a whole

So I’ll cut out the longer duration work and higher volume work sometimes too
But I’ve learned not to do it for too long
Cause it keeps ya honest
