What To Do When Your Hips Won't Open Up

Understand that, if you want more hip mobility, you have to actually train your hips to be more mobile. At a level of intensity that is high enough for it to matter.
And so what I mean by that is I'll have guys that come to me that say they have tight hips. And what they do with their training is they're going, let's say, they're going heavy on squats, going heavy on decks, they're doing high output sprints, high output jumps. And then their hip work will be like three sets of five of like frogs or whatever, whatever “insert hip exercise” that we have. Right. And they're like, 'I don't know why my hips are so tight.' Well, if we look at how your body adapts, your body's going to adapt very truly and very accurately to what it is that we ask it to do.
And so, if we're asking you to do a bunch of high output stuff, but then, in relation what we ask your hips to do in terms of range of motion, it's very very low in comparative intensity and output, then it's it's no like it's no wonder that the hips are actually not adapting the way that you want.
What that means is, like, we might need to do some things that are for three minutes or five minutes or 100 reps or 300 reps or lots of weight. That puts your hips in the end range of motion, right? We might have to do end-range work for very high amounts of volume and intensity, if we want that to adapt in the same way that you're asking your body to adapt in the other higher intensity and higher output stuff that you're doing.
