Training That Transcends The Physical
Share
If your training does not make you wonder how you’re going to survive
It’s not going to change you
Remember that when you walk in the gym to do the same plan for the gazillionth week in a row
Very basic principle here
Does your training ask you to actively choose to turn away from death?
Let’s make that real for what that would actually look or not look like
What it would look like:
Hold a position till you simply can’t anymore. Keep going when you start shaking. Keep going when your mind screams no. Keep going when it doesn’t seem like you can keep going.
Keep going till you put yourself in a position you’re really not sure whether or not you’re going to survive
That’s one example of what it WOULD look like
What it wouldn’t look like:
4 sets of 6 reps in DB BP with 55lbs where you’re more interested in whether your bestie (bruh what) text you back or not than you are in the difficulty of the session.
Or, ya know - rolling around on a roller for 15 min cause it’s habit and routine and what you do EVERY time
Wanna do it, fine - but that isn’t CHANGING you
To the degree you COULD change yourself
And that’s really what it comes down to
How much do you want to change?
How much are you willing to experience to create that change?
Again - lets make it real
A game - your competition or performance - can feel like a threat to your survival. Scout in the stands, your starting position on the line, possibility of getting a major contract and being able to buy your mom a house…
These circumstances can put you in a position where you feel a direct threat to your survival
They will only feel that way, IF you have not caused yourself, through preparation, to experience MORE than that
So how do we do that? Like how do we really, practically, do that?
We actually PHYSICALLY ask you to do very very difficult things. Where you have to confront MASSIVE amounts of work… and actually complete it. Work that feels like it’s going to kill you… but you make it through and it doesn’t
Now there’s context here, cause this doesn’t mean we’re going to ask you to go out and run 200 miles - cause that would certainly do ONE aspect of what we’re talking about
But it would not apply to getting you specifically applied for a sport
So it’s a marrying of the two
Doing things like impulses, spine work, joint moves, rebound reps, depth drops
All of these things that are much more applicable to actually getting you prepared to perform at a high level
AND
Can be used in a way in which you can put yourself in a position where you feel like you’re going to die… so you can figure out how to not die… and cause your body to make the corresponding adaptation
So yeah man, this is more than exercises and quick fixes
This isn’t just about rehabbing or getting you past a surgery
This is about changing you, PERIOD. It’s a whole process that WORKS. And can be embarked upon for a very long time.
You simply have to be willing to invest yourself.
