Stop Using Weightlifting As Preparation For Your Sport

Stop Using Weightlifting As Preparation For Your Sport

July 26, 2025

So one thing to take into consideration if you're preparing for a sport is many of the things that are seen to prepare for sport, like they're going to be designed for a sport in and of itself, like bodybuilding, powerlifting and weightlifting. Those things are sports in and of themselves, right? And a lot of times what we see people do in the gym for preparation are taken from those sports.

So it's a little bit like if a bodybuilder were to train for bodybuilding by doing baseball or by doing football or by doing basketball, right? So, understand that those lifts and the movements that we see within those sports of bodybuilding, weightlifting, powerlifting, those are options that we can do for our training preparation.

But understand again that those were designed as sports themselves. So it's not like if we don't do those, we're not training. It's more like if we don't do those, then we're just not doing that sport, right? So preparation or training is more like if we look at what is, for me at least, it's like if we look at everything that your body can do. We want to be able to train your body to do everything that it can do at a very basic level, like all the different joints that you have, all the different muscles that you have, the contractile tissue. We want to train that to be able to express fully in its output as well as emotions, thoughts, et cetera.

And so my point here is like when we look at training, understand that it does not have to be bodybuilding, it doesn't have to be weightlifting, it doesn't have to be powerlifting. We don't have to do those sports to prepare you.

And in fact, I would actually say that we probably don't want to do those sports to prepare you because they're sports in and of themselves. So it's fine to create new things. It's fine to do things that are a little bit different because what we're trying to do is actually prepare your body, actually prepare your tissue, not do those sports.
